A U.S. Department of Energy assessment of AI for critical energy infrastructure concludes that human supervision is essential to mitigate the most significant risks; over‑reliance on decision‑support tools can lead to misoperation or failure. Nor are AI systems self‑sustaining. Training and operating large models require huge amounts of electricity and water to cool data‑centre hardware. The International Energy Agency projects that electricity demand from data centres will more than double by 2030, reaching about 945 terawatt‑hours – AI‑optimised data centres will be the main driver of that growth. In the United States, data centres are expected to account for almost half of all growth in power demand. A separate analysis from Yale University notes that generative AI “uses massive amounts of energy for computation and millions of gallons of fresh water to cool equipment,” and that AI’s environmental footprint is “large and growing”. In other words, an off‑grid fortress stocked with solar panels and batteries isn’t going to run your private GPT forever. Dependence on AI means dependence on global power grids, supply chains and specialised technicians.
3. Dependency weakens control
Handing your security to machines shifts power away from you. The Center for AI Safety warns that advanced AI poses catastrophic risks if malicious actors weaponise it, if organisations prioritise profits over safety or if systems become rogue and drift from their original goals. Adversarial attacks can manipulate training data or inputs, causing systems to misbehave. Because AI models are built and hosted by a handful of companies, whoever controls the code holds authority. If a model provider goes bankrupt, a state actor restricts exports, or a hacker hijacks your system, your supposed saviour could stop functioning or turn against you. Over‑reliance on automation therefore reduces resilience. Experienced elites recognise that technology should augment human decision‑making, not replace it.
How seasoned elites use technology wisely
Elites who successfully incorporate technology into their resilience plans follow several principles:
- Use AI as leverage, not replacement. They adopt automation to simplify tasks and gain insights, but always keep human oversight. MIT experts studying AI adoption stress that successful companies treat AI as a process redesign and embed it in workflows with strong governance.
- Hybrid resilience matters. Advanced tools are combined with trusted human teams, diversified assets and contingency planning. Technology is one layer in a broader system that includes cash reserves, real estate in multiple jurisdictions, and robust personal networks.
- Maintain control over infrastructure. Owning or controlling the hardware, software and data – rather than relying entirely on third‑party platforms – reduces vulnerability to supply‑chain disruptions or policy changes. Leaders emphasise data access as the “hydrogen of AI” and design governance structures that balance innovation with risk management.
- Embrace disciplined governance. AI pilots that scale successfully are co‑owned by business leaders and technical teams and have clear scaling pathways. Speedy experiments occur alongside efforts to harden promising tools and integrate them into compliant, audited systems.

The AI savior myth isn’t limited to billionaires. Many of us hope technology will fix our finances, relationships or health without demanding effort. Instead, consider these guidelines:
- Don’t outsource survival. No chatbot can build your emergency fund, manage your investments or care for your loved ones. Take responsibility for your finances and security. Start with liquidity and a diversified portfolio rather than speculating on high‑tech fixes.
- Understand the tools you use. Before entrusting money or privacy to an app, learn how it works. Control comes from comprehension, not blind faith.
- Value redundancy over novelty. Backup power, multiple income streams and human connections matter more than the latest gadget. Ensure you have manual alternatives if digital systems go down.
- Prioritise empathy and ethics. Machines can’t feel, so cultivate human judgment and compassion in your decision‑making.
